Sunrise Story #90

This is the 90th installment of a 100-day challenge to write a new vignette every morning.

He was so preoccupied with whether or not he could that he failed to stop to consider if he should. By the time this occurred to Liam, he was staring down the slope.

The truth? He couldn’t and shouldn’t—but he’d have to, somehow.

His friends—colleagues, really—stood among a cluster of trees near the bottom. Even at a distance, he could see Andy’s crossed arms. Andy had known what Liam hadn’t wanted to admit, and now they’d both see the consequences in real time. Andy, of course, had set out to prove a point: Liam’s impulsivity and pride made him a liability—and therefore not suited for leadership.

No matter what Liam did now, he’d prove himself unworthy of the promotion. Bailing would signal unreliability; crashing would signal irresponsibility.

He’d have to ski flawlessly. As he leaned forward, he braced for what were sure to be exorbitant medical bills—even if he managed to keep his job.
