Sunrise Story #78

This is the 78th installment of a 100-day challenge to write a new vignette every morning.

Malls are great places to shop; I can find everything I need under one roof. Corn dogs, flatscreen TVs, feather pillows. It’s all here. What more do I need?

The other shoppers don’t share my perspective. They’re panicking. Calling their families, arguing with authorities, yelling at each other over food-court seating. They’ve started a tally; it says 11 days right now, but I’m not so sure that’s right. Wouldn’t we have run out of food by now?

Someone is always crying. No matter where I go—crying. Sometimes I hide in dressing rooms just to get a moment of peace.

A couple people tried to get me to sign a letter to the governor. A bunch more tried to get me to join their little quasi-rebellion. There’s talk of rushing the perimeter.

I’m uninterested in all that. I’ve got a corn dog, and the electronics store is playing Disney movies on loop. I’m good.
