Sunrise Story #75

This is the 75th installment of a 100-day challenge to write a new vignette every morning.

She did a happy dance because all of the socks from the dryer matched. Green stars went with green stars; rainbow polka dots went with rainbow polka dots. She hadn’t even lost either of the studious cat socks! Rina dropped each sock into the laundry basket with pride.

She’d watched Hildy do laundry a thousand times, but she’d never tried her hand at it until now. As she folded the socks, she wondered why she’d ever been so willing to pay someone to do this. How much had they given Hildy each week? $300? $750? $12,000?

Bernard kept track of the books, so Rina truly had no clue what they used to pay Hildy. She decided it was too much—until she noticed the kids’ second hamper.

On second thought, she decided, she would gladly pay $12,000 a week if it meant avoiding her son’s gym socks.

She washed them anyway; Bernard would bring the kids back in 39 minutes, and if she wanted them to stay, she’d have to wash socks on weekends.
