This is the 43rd installment of a 100-day challenge to write a new vignette every morning.
The beauty of the sunset was obscured by the industrial cranes—but, later, Gracie would tell everyone that it was still the most beautiful sunset she’d ever seen. Her partners in crime would concur, and they’d all pop a bottle of champagne.
They’d needed to hold their ground until the end of the day. Mike’s budget allowed for equipment costs and crew wages up through Day 37. At the end of the 37th day, the sun set, the crew left, and Mike found his pockets too empty to bring them back for Day 38.
The trees would stay; Mike would go—and so would Gracie’s team.
The most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen, Gracie would say again and again.
