Sunrise Story #32

This is the 32nd installment of a 100-day challenge to write a new vignette every morning.

He excelled at firing people nicely. It was the biggest reason for his own job security.

When Jerry had received the promotion that tasked him with firing his former peers, he’d transformed his office into an oasis. Essential oils filled the tiny room, and open windows brought a pleasant autumn breeze. On a small speaker in the back corner, he played ambient sounds—usually ocean waves. He had even replaced the usual office chairs with plush armchairs.

The only problem: At the end of the day, these people would still lose their livelihood and leave his serene office wondering how they’d pay their bills.

Jerry’s former cubicle neighbor threw the essential oil diffuser, and it shattered against the wall.

“Please leave your ID at security on your way out,” Jerry said. “And send Alicia in.”

On a more personal note, I spent most of today finalizing preparation for my virtual murder mystery party and then hosting it—and it was time well spent. Technical difficulties aside, the evening was a success overall, and my friends didn’t see the twist coming! I enjoyed using “Twine,” and I think I’ll do more with it in the future. I’ve even considered taking some of these Sunrise Stories and adapting them to create multimedia choose-your-own-adventure stories. Which one should I adapt first?
