This is the 17th installment of a 100-day challenge to write a new vignette every morning.
A song can make or ruin a person’s day if they let it get to them. Case in point: “Happy Birthday to You.” Sung as a loved one brings you coffee and breakfast in bed on your birthday? Make.
Crowed at dawn by drunk college-age neighbors whose party started 12 hours ago? Break. Yelled on a loop out of context by twin toddlers who think there’s nothing funnier than the exasperation on your face? Break. (Make? It depends on the day, I suppose.)
Played by an annual e-card that someone forgot to cancel after the funeral? Break.
I stare at the computer for hours—or at least a very long minute. I play it again.
